couraging results, it was decided to a further extensive trial with this drug in certain hyperendemic kala-azar areas in the tea districts of Mangaldai, as an anti-kala-azar drug of such promising quality was indispensable, especially when, due to present war-time conditions, other pentavalent antimony compounds of proved value, e.g. solustibosan, neostibosan, etc., suitable for mass administration, disappeared from the market. Sodium antimony gluconate in the earlier part of its clinical trials in the treatment of kala-azar, by certain workers in India, failed to produce full therapeutic results, the chief reason attributable being presumably inadequate dosages. The only statement on record so far available on its failure has been made by Napier and Sen Gupta (1943), who state that in three of their cases treated with this compound, there was no effect in one case and slight improvement but no cure in the other two cases. There is how-

A Preliminary Note on the Treatment of 21 Cases of Kala-Azar with Sodium Antimony Gluconate. (With Special Reference to Its Suitability for Mass Administration on Tea Estates)

Introduction.?The senior writer, Burke (1943), made an appeal for an efficient successor to neostibosan (Bayer), this, preferably, to be a British product. What seems to be an almost perfect answer to that appeal?and indeed a British product?is the preparation stibatin (Glaxo Laboratories), or sodium antimony gluconate (antimony v-hexonate), a crystal-clear sterile solution containing 20 mg. of...

Impact of amphotericin-B in the treatment of kala-azar on the incidence of PKDL in Bihar, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Of the two reservoirs of infection of kala-azar i.e., patients of kala-azar and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), PKDL provides easy access for the sandfly to pick up the parasites. In the last epidemic of 1977 in India, the importance of PKDL as a potential cause of increase in number of kala-azar cases was ignored. During recent years, we found an increase in ...
